Ecosystem services in Lubuskie

What are ecosystem services?
…all natural phenomena, processes and functions that support and regulate life on Earth and have a direct or indirect impact on human well-being.
In short, ecosystem services are all the benefits we derive from nature every day. Clean air, drinking water, fertile soil, pollination, climate regulation and flood protection are just some of the ‘services’ that healthy ecosystems provide for us.
Forests, meadows, peatlands, rivers and wetlands act as natural infrastructure: they filter water, store carbon dioxide, mitigate the effects of droughts and heatwaves, and support biodiversity. It is thanks to them that cities are more resilient to climate change, and rural areas maintain their productivity and environmental stability.
In the EO-BALP-CCN1 project, we use state-of-the-art satellite data and remote sensing tools to monitor the condition of ecosystems and assess their ability to provide ecosystem services. Thanks to Earth observation, we can analyse changes in the landscape in an objective and repeatable manner and gain a better understanding of how human activity and climate change affect the functioning of the environment.
The project team will analyse and attempt to value selected ecosystem services for the Lubuskie Voivodship, Poland. Understanding these issues helps to make better decisions regarding spatial planning, nature conservation and adaptation to the ongoing effects of climate change. This is an important step towards sustainable development, in which human needs go hand in hand with care for the natural world.
